Camera e-fines in Dhaka, and how to spot a fake fine SMS

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) now files traffic cases from CCTV and AI-camera footage, and fake fine messages are going round. Here is how a real notice reaches you, how to pay, and what DMP will never ask for, from DMP's public notices as reported in the press. Checked on 14 Oct 2026.

What does the camera catch?

DMP's traffic division has put AI-enabled cameras at signals and other key spots in Dhaka. The footage feeds an e-traffic prosecution system that files a digital case against the vehicle. DMP named these offences (Dhaka Tribune, 3 May 2026):

  • Running a red light or crossing the stop line
  • Riding on the wrong side
  • Illegal parking or blocking the left lane
  • Picking up passengers in a way that blocks traffic
  • No registration or fitness certificate

The fine amounts are the ones in the Road Transport Act 2018: see motorcycle fines.

How does a real e-fine notice arrive?

  • By letter, sent by registered post to the address on the vehicle's registration, signed by an officer of the traffic division or the Traffic Technical Unit.
  • By SMS only when needed, and only from 01320-042207 and 01320-042227.

Because the letter goes to the registered address, a bike still in the seller's name sends your fines to them. One more reason to finish the ownership transfer (the buyer has 60 days, Act s.21). Source: Dhaka Tribune, 25 May 2026.

How do you pay, and what if you ignore it?

DMP's first notice (3 May 2026) said to appear at DMP headquarters or the traffic division named in the notice and settle the case there, paying through a bank or mobile financial service. Its later warning (25 May 2026) named Upay and CBL as the approved online platforms. If you do not appear and pay, DMP will seek a summons or an arrest warrant through a special metropolitan magistrate (Dhaka Tribune, 3 May 2026). Follow the instructions printed on your own notice.

How to spot a fake traffic fine SMS

  • DMP sends e-fine SMS only from 01320-042207 and 01320-042227. Any other sender is not DMP.
  • DMP never asks for a PIN, password, OTP or any other banking secret.
  • Do not pay or share personal details outside the official process. If someone asks you to pay for a CCTV case, check with the nearest police station or traffic division.
  • Questions about a camera case: DMP's Delta-3 desk on 01320-042207 and 01320-042227, or 999.

Auto-fines on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway

This is a separate system, run by the Highway Police, not DMP. From 18 August 2026 its AI cameras on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway detect speeding, illegal parking and riding against the traffic; the case is sent by SMS to the registered owner, payable by bKash or Nagad. The fine amounts were not announced, and the announcement did not say whether motorcycles are covered (Dhaka Tribune, 15 Aug 2026). Highway speed limits: speed limits for motorcycles.
