Carrying a pillion and luggage
Extra weight changes how the bike brakes and turns. Set it up for the load and brief your passenger.
Steps
- Check the maximum load in your manual. It includes you, the pillion and all luggage.
- Set the tyre pressure for a loaded bike, as the manual says. It is usually higher with a pillion.
- Brief your pillion: helmet on, feet on the footrests, hold your waist or the grab rail, and sit still through turns.
- Make sure a saree, orna, scarf or bag strap cannot reach the rear wheel or chain. Check the saree guard is fitted.
- Keep luggage low, centred and tied down with proper straps. Nothing wider than the handlebars.
- Brake earlier and corner slower than when riding alone.
Common mistakes
- Carrying more than one pillion, or a child in front of you.
- Hanging heavy bags from the handlebar. They affect steering.
- Letting the pillion touch the hot exhaust when getting on and off.
When to go to a mechanic
- If you often ride two-up, ask about adjusting the rear suspension preload.
- A missing saree guard, loose footrests or a cracked grab rail.
This is general guidance for typical commuter motorcycles. Your owner's manual is the final word on pressures, intervals and oil grades for your bike. If you are unsure, ask a trusted mechanic.
