Clutch and throttle cables: free play and lube
A stiff or badly adjusted cable makes gear changes rough and can be dangerous. Learn to feel when it is right.
What you need
- Cable lube spray, or a few drops of light oil
- Your owner's manual for the free play figure
Steps
- Clutch: pull the lever gently until you feel the cable start to pull. That loose travel at the tip is the free play.
- Compare it with the manual. To adjust, loosen the lock ring at the lever, turn the barrel adjuster, and lock it again.
- Throttle: with the engine off, twist and let go. The grip must snap back to closed by itself.
- Repeat with the handlebar turned fully left and fully right. It must snap back in every position.
- Lube both cables where they enter the lever and grip housing, then work the lever and grip a few times.
Common mistakes
- Adjusting the clutch to zero free play. The clutch can slip and wear out.
- Riding with a throttle that sticks open, even slightly.
- Using grease on cables. It thickens and makes them stiffer.
When to go to a mechanic
- Frayed strands at the cable end, or a cable that stays stiff after lube.
- A throttle that does not snap back. Do not ride until it is fixed.
This is general guidance for typical commuter motorcycles. Your owner's manual is the final word on pressures, intervals and oil grades for your bike. If you are unsure, ask a trusted mechanic.
