Your free services explained: 1st, 2nd and 3rd
Most new bikes come with a few free services. Knowing what each one covers stops you from missing one or paying for what should be free.
What you need
- Your service book or warranty card
Steps
- Read the service book. It lists when each free service is due, by distance or by date. Usually whichever comes first counts.
- First service: the most important one. It usually includes an oil change to flush out running-in metal dust, plus a check of bolts, chain, brakes and cables.
- Second and third services: usually a general check and adjustment, often with an air filter clean, spark plug check and another oil change.
- Ask before the work starts what is free and what you pay for. Often the labour is free but oil and parts are charged.
- Make sure the book is stamped and dated each time, and keep the bill.
Common mistakes
- Missing a free service date. You can lose the free service and may weaken a warranty claim.
- Doing the free services at a local shop. Many warranties need the authorised service centre.
When to go to a mechanic
- Bring a written list of anything odd you noticed since the last service. Free services are the time to raise it.
This is general guidance for typical commuter motorcycles. Your owner's manual is the final word on pressures, intervals and oil grades for your bike. If you are unsure, ask a trusted mechanic.
