Buying a helmet and looking after it

The helmet is the one part of your kit that has to work the first time. Fit and certification matter more than looks.

Steps

  1. Choose a full-face helmet if you can. It protects the chin and jaw, which open-face helmets do not.
  2. Check the certification. In Bangladesh, helmets are reported to need BSTI certification to be sold. Also look for an international label such as ECE or DOT. Avoid helmets with no label at all. Our guide "Helmet labels: BSTI, ECE 22.06 and the rest" explains each mark.
  3. Try it on. It should be snug all round, with no pressure points, and must not twist when you shake your head.
  4. Fasten the strap every ride, so only a finger or two fits under it.
  5. Clean the visor with water and a soft cloth, and wash the removable liner with mild soap.
  6. Get one for your pillion too.

Common mistakes

  • Reusing a helmet after a crash or a hard drop, even if it looks fine. The foam inside may be crushed. Replace it.
  • Hanging the helmet on the mirror. It damages the liner and invites theft.
  • Buying second-hand. You cannot know its history.

When to go to a mechanic

  • If the bike's helmet lock is broken or missing, get it fixed so the helmet is not left loose.
  • Replace the helmet when the liner is loose, the strap is worn, or the maker's suggested life is up.

This is general guidance for typical commuter motorcycles. Your owner's manual is the final word on pressures, intervals and oil grades for your bike. If you are unsure, ask a trusted mechanic.
