Riding safely at night
At night you see less and are seen less. Many vehicles and rickshaws have weak or no lights at all.
Steps
- Before you leave, check the headlight on both beams, tail light, brake light and indicators.
- Clean your visor. Scratches and dirt turn oncoming lights into glare.
- Ride slower than in daytime, so you can stop within the distance your headlight shows.
- Dip to low beam for oncoming traffic and when following another vehicle.
- Expect unlit rickshaws, vans, pedestrians and parked trucks. Look well ahead.
- Wear something reflective, and stop for a break if you feel tired.
Common mistakes
- Using a dark or tinted visor after sunset.
- Keeping high beam on in the city. It blinds others and makes them swerve.
- Staring into oncoming headlights. Look to the left edge of the road instead.
When to go to a mechanic
- A headlight that is dim or points too high or too low. It can be adjusted.
- Lights that flicker or dim when you rev. The charging system may need a check.
This is general guidance for typical commuter motorcycles. Your owner's manual is the final word on pressures, intervals and oil grades for your bike. If you are unsure, ask a trusted mechanic.
