Warranty: what can void it
A warranty only helps if you can still claim it. These are the usual ways riders lose it without knowing.
What you need
- Your warranty card and service book. Terms differ by brand; the card is the final word.
Steps
- Read the warranty card once, end to end. Note what is covered, for how long, and what is excluded.
- Do every scheduled service on time, at the place the card asks for.
- Keep every bill and make sure the service book is stamped.
- Report a fault as soon as you notice it, in writing if possible, so it is on record within the warranty period.
Common mistakes
- Modifying the exhaust, wiring, lights or engine tuning. Many brands refuse claims on modified parts.
- Skipping or delaying scheduled services, or using non-genuine parts on covered items.
- Tampering with the odometer, or letting an unauthorised shop open the engine.
When to go to a mechanic
- Before any modification or major repair, ask the authorised service centre whether it affects your warranty.
- Note that crash damage and normal wear items (tyres, pads, chain) are usually not covered.
This is general guidance for typical commuter motorcycles. Your owner's manual is the final word on pressures, intervals and oil grades for your bike. If you are unsure, ask a trusted mechanic.
