A fair workshop bill, and how to spot upselling

Most mechanics are honest, but a vague job and no estimate is how bills grow. A few habits keep it fair.

Steps

  1. Describe the problem clearly and say what you want done. Ask for an estimate before work starts.
  2. Ask them to call you before doing anything that is not on the list.
  3. Ask for an itemised bill: each part, oil and labour on its own line.
  4. Ask for the old parts back. A part that was really worn is easy to show.
  5. Compare the work with your service book. If a big job is suggested, get a second opinion first.

Common mistakes

  • Saying 'just fix whatever is needed'. It is an open cheque.
  • Accepting extras you did not ask for: engine flush, fuel additives, early replacement of parts with life left.
  • Paying without checking the bill line by line.

When to go to a mechanic

  • Find one mechanic you trust and stay with them. A mechanic who knows your bike's history saves money over time.

This is general guidance for typical commuter motorcycles. Your owner's manual is the final word on pressures, intervals and oil grades for your bike. If you are unsure, ask a trusted mechanic.
